Newsletter #13, issued in June 2022, has in its background the aggressive war in Ukraine turned into a war of attrition in which both contenders, aggressor and attacked, have still not reached the point to be brought to the negotiating table. In this number are included Spanish translations of some of the documents drafted by the different Eurodefense working groups and observatories in order to increase its diffusion.
Ambassador Manuel de la Cámara, rapporteur of the Observatories on Migration Policy and the Mediterranean Basin presents the updates prepared for the Eurodefense International Meeting 22, held in Paris from 19th to 21st May. In the first one he analyzes the evolution of the politics of EU immigration under the New Pact on Migration and Asylum and the EU response to the exodus of Ukrainian refugees to Europe. In the second one, Ambassador De la Cámara reviews the most important events that have recently occurred in the Mediterranean Basin, where regional tensions have increased and Russian aggression in Ukraine is having economic repercussions for the countries of North Africa.
Then Eurodefense-United Kingdom in his report on the Observatory of EU-NATO Relationship reviews the multiple collaboration activities between the two organizations and the Alliance’s expansion prospects. The report written by Pierre Berthelet, member of EuroDefense-France and rapporteur of the Observatory on Anti-Terrorism, introduces us to the recent initiatives of the EU institutions to counteract this scourge.
Then two documents produced by Eurodefense Working Groups are included in the Newsletter. The first of them “A Strategic Compass and what’s next?”, drafted by Iric van Doorn, chairman of EWG27B and member of ED-Netherlands, is commented at length by our Vice-president, General AF Federico Yaniz (R) also active member of EWG27B on his editorial. The second document produced by EDFR, under EWG 26B “Energy, Climate, Security and Defence”, deals on how you should tune in security and defense in Europe against the challenges of climate change and the desired energy transition, taking into account the European Green Deal and the Strategic Compass.
Newsletter 13 concludes with the usual sections of news and reviews.
