The purpose of the monthly EuroDefense-Portugal Newsletter, with original articles published in Portuguese/English, is to bring to everyone’s attention EuroDefense-Portugal’s publications, as well as the opinions of some experts on European Security and Defence, and on topics that have marked the current month in Portugal, Europe and the world.

The Western Mediterranean Forum – the 5+5 Dialogue

The Western Mediterranean Forum, commonly referred to as the 5+5 Dialogue, comprises Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia.
As a trans-mediterranean initiative, the goal of the 5+5 Dialogue is to ensure closer cooperation among the five EU Member States and the five Arab Maghreb countries through political dialogue and cooperation and by encouraging more effective resource management as a means of strengthening interdependence and regional development.

Thoughts on recent reading

Those who follow the international news can hardly fail to be aware that the world seems to be spiralling out of control and that the regulatory systems put in place after the Second World War are struggling to keep pace. We live in a world in which the media is chock-a-block with analyses, inflamed debates, experts in both information and disinformation, forecasts swiftly debunked by facts and rational argument so laced with pure emotion that we may be forgiven for being confused.

Report on the Breakfast Debate with Alain Lamassoure on 18 April 2023

On 18 April, we were pleased to welcome French politician Alain Lamassoure, former Minister Delegate for European Affairs and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1999 to 2019, for a breakfast debate on the topic of “Those who control the past control the future”. It was he who, in November 2020 had founded the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe (OHTE) under the aegis of the Council of Europe.
